Dietary Overlap among Axis, Fallow, and Black-tailed Deer and Cattle

Microhistological techniques were used to determine dietary overlap in seasonal diets of native Columbian black-tailed deer, exotic axis deer, fallow deer, and cattle at Point Reyes National Seashore. Results indicate that their diets throughout the year are comprised of only a few plant species: black-tailed deer eating mostly forbs, axis and fallow deer eating grasses and forbs, and cattle eating grasses. Overlap was greater between axis and fallow deer and cattle than between black-tailed deer and the other species for most of the year. During summer, however, dietary overlap among all species was similar.
