Monthly water samples were taken from three streams within Grand Portage National Monument from May to November, 2000. In addition to measurements of stream size and flow characteristics, water transparency was determined, and samples taken for chemical and biological analysis. On site measurements were pH, temperature, conductivity and total dissolved solids. In-house lab analysis for dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, total alkalinity, chloride, hardness, nitrogen, ammonia, phosphate, silica and sulfide were performed with LaMotte test kits. Three sets of samples (May, August, November) were submitted to a certified lab to determine levels of metals, ions, chlorophyll A and coliform bacteria. Single samples submitted in May were below the detection limit for mercury and PCBs. Results for Grand Portage, Poplar and Snow Creeks indicate all these small streams have high water quality in the short sections that flow through the Monument.
