The author studied four pools toward the mouth of Redwood Creek in the summer of 1985. These areas maintain slightly cooler temperatures than surrounding water, and provide excellent habitat for young salmonids. This geomorphic study examines pool formation, and documents water temperature relationships and inflow of cold water. Gravel bars are required to isolate and maintain the cold pools. Only the width of the pool appears correlated with temperature (long, narrow pools being cooler), and inflowing cold water maintains the cooler temperatures. Future research is outlined, and recommendations suggest management actions to maintain cold pools as nursery habitat. The 30 figures include drawings of pools and cross sections, temperature profiles, and more. Four tables show temperature/physical characteristics of cold pools, discharges into the pools and locations. The three appendices contain temperature plots and data, and seepage measurements.
