There were three primary objectives of the fish inventory project in 2003: 1) complete qualitative surveys of fishes within Chesapeake and Ohio Canal NHP that were initiated in 2002, 2) conduct qualitative surveys of fishes in Antietam National Battlefield, George Washington Memorial Parkway, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Monocacy National Battlefield, and Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, and 3) initiate quantitative sampling of fishes in C&O Canal NHP. All three objectives were accomplished. Additionally, we collected water chemistry and physical habitat data at quantitative sites that will be analyzed as part of two other projects focusing on water resources and biological monitoring within the National Capitol Region. We captured and identified 5,604 fishes representing nine families at 31 qualitative sites within the six parks. Quantitative sampling at 26 sites in C&O Canal NHP resulted in the capture and identification of 7,494 fishes representing 11 families. Current species totals for the six parks are: Antietam National Battlefield (33), C&O Canal NHP (61), George Washington Memorial Parkway (29), Harpers Ferry NHP (32), Monocacy National Battlefield (34+), and Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts (16).
