Seismicity analysis of four known geothermal areas in California (Lassen, Imperial Valley, Coso, and Geysers) and one non-geothermal area (San Jacinto fault zone) revealed several similarities and certain notable differences. These may allow for a definition of a geothermal earthquake. 75% of the earthquakes were found to cluster temporally within 18 hours and spatially within 10 km in the geothermal areas. The average clustering time in the non-geothermal area was more than four days and the spatial separation was greater than 10 km. Geysers, however, was an exception as there was no temporal clusering of earthquakes seen. The Lassen area, on the other hand, is tightly clustered in time and is also a vapor dominated reservoir.
