Nitrogen wet depositon of 3-5 kg N/ha to the east side of the Colorado Front Range in ROMO, in the form of nitrate and ammonium, is among the highest measured in the State. Excess N depositon will cause lake and stream acidification in a process similar to that caused by sulfate deposition, with an important difference. Since nitrogen is a critical plant nutrient, any realistic projection of nitrogen-caused acidification must include an understanding of ecosystem nutrient cycling. The first phase of this project (6/2002 - 12/2003) was to develop and parameterize the DAYCENT and PHREEQC models for Icy Brook, Andrews Creek, and Loch Vale. This report describes the progress in model development and application.
