The study was conducted to determine the potential for human infection of the hantavirus throughout the United States. Thirty-nine National Parks were surveyed by testing small mammals for an antibody that was reactive to the Sin Nombre virus. The Sin Nombre virus was found to be the causative agent of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a disease that can be lethal to humans.
