In 1985 and 1986, stems of all sizes and scar condition were relocated from the 1963-69 sequoia tree inventory in pre-selected areas of the Giant Forest grove. It was found that recently burned stands had a higher mortality rate when trees were less than a foot in diameter. Larger trees had nearly equal mortality rates. Previous fire scars were found to have no detectable relationship to tree survival in either burned or unburned areas.
