The vegetation and soils of Fishtail Mesa were originally studied in May 1958 (Jameson et aI. 1962). At that time, the objective was to provide management information and a comparison site for similar areas on the mainland, also administered by the U. S. Forest Service, which were grazed by domestic livestock. Our study was conducted to compare changes in the vegetation since 1958 and to evaluate Fishtail Mesa as a relict site for long-term surveillance of ecological change in the pinyon-juniper and sagebrush-mutton grass communities.
