Argemone arizonica Ownbey (Roaring Springs Prickly Poppy) is a rare, herbaceous, perennial. It was first collected by Frederick Hall Knowlton in 1889, a professor of botany at Columbian University (now George Washington University) and later described by Gerald Ownbey (1958). Listed as a Category 2 plant (United. States Department of the Interior 1980) after having been proposed as a candidate plant (United States Department of the Interior 1975), it was designated "a species of special concern" (United States Department of the Interior 1996). A summary of its ecology and distribution is presented following surveys conducted in March and July, 1998, thereby expanding on and refining previous information for the species (Ownbey et al. 1998).
