This historic structures report contains historical information about El Morro National Monument. El Morro National Monument is located in west-central New Mexico, fifty-eight miles southeast of Gallup and forty-three miles west of Grants. Soldiers of New Spain came to the huge sandstone cliff that juts skyward from the plain as early as 1583, and perhaps earlier. Later, El Morro witnessed the progression past its base of Mexican and American military columns and American emigrant parties. It provided a landmark, a guidepost for human travelers in different periods of time. The monument commemorates nearly three centuries of exploration and travel in the American Southwest.
