Zooplankton Assemblages of Inland Lakes in Isle Royale National Park, Michigan USA

The objective of this study was to document the zooplankton assemblages of lakes across the landscape of Isle Royale National Park. The results suggest that the crustacean and rotifer assemblages were very similar among park lakes, with Bosmina longirostris, Keratella cochlearis, Conochilus unicornis, Polyarthra dolichopetera, and Ploesoma hudsoni having the highest relative abundances. The few exceptions were not clearly linked with basin morphology and environmental variables. In comparison, the frequency of occurrence of Bosmina longirostris also was high in lakes in nearby Ontario, Canada, with the other taxa varying in occurrence. However, the dominant crusteacean taxa of inland park lakes were different from those in Lake Superior. Rotifer taxa with the highest freqeuency of occurrence in inland park lakes were similar to those in northern Michigan lakes. For park lakes sampled more than once, the structure of the zooplankton assemblages showed limited temporal changes in most cases. The potential effects of fish population on the species composition and density of zooplankton were unresolved. A long-term monitoring program was recommended to assess interannual variation of water quality and the taxonomic structures of zooplankton assemblages in lakes across the landscape of the park.
