Final Report: Mussel (Bivalvia: Unionidae) Survey of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area Corridor, 2000-01

Five pools (Coon Rapids, St. Anthony Falls, Pools 1 and 2, and Upper Pool 3) of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area were surveyed for freshwater mussels. Surveys were conducted using timed searches (qualitative) and hand collection of mussels while wading, snorkeling, and SCUBA diving. Quantitative surveys were also conducted at five sites using .25 square meter substrate samples. Qualitative sampling aided in the rapid determination of species richness, relative abundance, overall abundance, species distrubution, and some age demographics. The quantitative sampling allowed the determination of density, relative abundance, and population demographics. Some discussion of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Lampsilis higginsi relocation program within the park is included.
