Landscape Restoration and Management Guidelines: Olympic National Park Headquarters
The Portico Group. 1999. Landscape Restoration and Management Guidelines: Olympic National Park Headquarters. Cultural Landscape Management Plans. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service
The goals of the Landscape Restoration and Management Guidelines for the Olympic National Park Headquarters are to ensure the preservation and future longevity of the landscape throughout the Headquarters' grounds. To enhance the existing landscape, additional plants have been selected that will provide seasonal interest while supporting the historical significance of the original planting. The guidelines offer both cyclical directives for landscape management and replacement recommendations to rehabilitate the plantings into a maintainable resource. Both phases of management consider the significant elements and characteristics of the original design. The Guidelines includes an outline of specific maintenance tasks within each zone; a landscape maintenance matrix, which identifies recommendations for the five major maintenance zones; a landscape maintenance schedule; and standards and specifications for restoration planting. The architecture and landscape at the Olympic National Park Headquarters reflect a design style from the late period of rustic park architecture. The vernacular architecture and use of endemic plants are characteristic of work completed by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) and the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
