Final environmental impact statement for the Elwha River Ecosystem Restoration project designed to restore native anadromous fish to the river by dam removal. The majority of the Elwha River Watershed and one of the dams is located within Olympic National Park, WA. The Elwha River ecosystem and native anadromous fisheries are severely degraded as a result of two hydroelectric dams (projects) and their reservoirs built in the early 1900s. Congress hasmandated the full restoration of this ecosystem and its native anadromous fisheries through the Elwha River Ecosystem and Fisheries Restoration Act. The Department of the Interiortherefore finds there is a need to return this river and the ecosystem to its natural, self-regulating state, and proposes removing both dams to accomplish this purpose and fulfill the congressional mandate.
