From the Introduction: Although all Northwest Coast peoples actively scavenged dead whales that washed ashore, only the occupants of the west coast of Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula hunted and killed whales. The salvage ethnographies of the early 20th century describe the technology and rituals associated with the Westcoast peoples .... The information in these works was collected, for the most part, after whaling ceased to be a regular activity.
