The sturgeon chub (Hybopsis gelida) and the sicklefin chub (Hybopsis meeki) are native to the Missouri River, and may have developed in the preglacial Missouri River system at a time when it was still a part of the Hudson Bay drainage (Metcalf 1966). Their historic range has extended from Montana (sturgeon chub) and North Dakota (sicklefin chub) down the Missouri River to the lower Mississippi River as far south as the mouth of the Ohio River (Bailey and Allum 1962; Pflieger 1975). In recent years the range of these chubs has been decreased, presumably by reservoirs and other changes in the physical character of the Missouri River system.
