Looks at taxonomy & distribution of algae in anchialine pools at Cape Kinau, Maui, as well as study of feeding anatomy & food choice of `opae`ula. Four community types were found: 1) cyanobacterial mats, 2) marine macrophytes (chlorophytes & rhodophytes), 3) intermediate type with both cyanobacterial mats & marine macrophytes, and 4) presence of charophyte Ruppia maritima. Cyanobacterial mat structure was examined & calcification found. Diatoms, dinoflagellates, and golden algae were present. Contains lists of algal species found. Salinity was major factor affecting algal distribution; others were substrate, light, tides, & wind. `Opae`ula generally fed on bottom materials (including algae & detritus) but also fed in water column when phytoplankton were abundant.
