Thermotolerance generated by plant/ fungal symbiosis

A group of scientists studied plant-fungal relationships and the influence of these relationships on plant adaptation, specifically, to geothermal soils in Lassen and Yellowstone National Parks. These soils have temperature fluctuations between 20 and 50 degrees C. The plant chosen for this study was Dichanthelium lanuginosum. A fungal endophyte that may be a new species of Curvularia was found on some of the plants. Through a combination of lab and field testing, a mutualistic relationship was found that helps these plants tolerate thermal fluctuations.
