"This report is the third in a series of reports conducted under the Day-use Mooring Buoys Coral Reef Monitoring Project. The report includes quarterly and/or semi-annual sampling surveys of sites at Canyons, Waikiki, Oahu; Makaha, Oahu; Puako, Hawaii and Old Kona Airport, Hawaii conducted between October 1997 and September 1998. The Day-use Mooring Buoy Project advisory committee determined sites at which surveys were conducted. The sites selected for surveys were chosen because of their popularity as commercial tourist dive sites, their potential for substantial anchor damage and their accessibility. Surveys were conducted on a quarterly basis for the first year, and on a semi-annual basis for the second year. The day-use mooring buoys were intstalled to limit damage to coral by anchors and anchor chains from, primarily, commercial dive charters. The surveys conducted by the University of Hawaii's Marine Option Program (MOP) were completed by student divers under the supervision of MOP staff. The surveys determined the per cent coverage of live coral, determined the presence of threatened and endangered species, and made video recordings of each transect during every survey conducted. This final report includes the written survey report, the videotapes of all surveys conducted and a database of all data collected during the project."
