Pika populations have declined in areas of low-elevation and high temperature thorughout the Great Basin. However, pikas persist at Lava Beds and Craters of the Moon National Monuments. The author suggests that the persistence of pika populations at these two locations is in part due to the use of lava tubes, caves, and other formations by pikas for cool refugia.
