Recent (Holocene) climate changes that have occurred in the intermountain region of the United States have caused major shifts in plant distribution and composition for that region. However, in the past 120 years, rates of vegetation change, primarily due to anthropogenic factors, have been unprecedented. One of the most pronounced changes in recent time occurred in the juniper and pinyon-juniper woodlands. Since settlement, juniper woodlands have significantly increased in density and distribution. This article reviews the history of this change, evaluates reasons for the expansion, and discusses possible management implications.
