Standardized bird monitoring conducted by the Point Reyes Bird Observatory in 2000 and 2001 within the Almanor Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest provided valuable baseline data and insight into the bird communities of the area. Important information regarding bird species diversity, species richness, abundance, productivity, and survivorship was gathered for numerous habitat and treatment types. The inventory has shown the Almanor Ranger District of Lassen National Forest to have a high diversity of passerine and near-passerine bird species in numerous habitat types. Among them are several sensitive species and species of management concern. Researchers recommend that future management efforts should focus on reversing the recent declines that have been observed in some bird species through restoring riparian and meadow systems, creating and preserving montane shrub habitat, and creating structurally diverse and open forest habitat.
