Remote sensing systems such as camera traps can aid in the conservation and protection of wild vertebrates. The Trailmaster 500 system is one of the most effective and versatile of these systems. The remote locations that these camera traps are often applied in, typically support low densities of medium to large mammals, and hence the incorporation of attractants into these systems has gone largely unquestioned. This study aimed to test the effect of bait and commercial lures on 4 key functions of the Trailmaster 500 system, including frequency of detections, number of species detected, time till detection and efficiency of the system. Data were collected over a 2-month period, from 8 pairs of camera stations in Lassen Volcanic National Park, California. Each pair consisted of 1 baited and 1 un-baited station located within the same habitat type. The bait applied was a combination of chicken and commercial lures.
