A program was implemented from 1988 to 1990 to delineate and monitor rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) spawning habitat in four Saugus River watershed locations: Saugus River at Hamilton Street bridge and Saugus Iron Works, Shute[s] Brook at Central Street bridge, and Pines River at intersection with U.S. Route 1. The primary objective of the program is to document temporal, spatial, and biological characteristics of smelt spawning in the Saugus River system. This report presents the preliminary results of a field sampling program to delineate and monitor rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) in the Massachusetts Bay, and specifically in this report, the Saugus River.
