In 1998, Congress passed the National Parks Omnibus Management Act, which addressed the needs of scientific information management. The act mandates a program of inventory and monitoring within the National Park System to establish baseline information. The program coordinates systematic effors to aquire 12 basic data sets for 265 parks, including information on air and water quality; base cartography; weather data, geology, soil and vegetation maps for the park; a natural resource bibliography; and information about vertebrate and vascular plant species in the parks. The goal of the biological inventory program is to provide park managers with comprehensive, scientifically based information about the selected biological resources occuring within park boundaries. This information would be a utility for making management decisions, scientific research and educating the public.
