The purpose of this project was to conduct a high-resolution soil inventory of three experimental watersheds on South Mesa, Bandelier National Monument. The 1.1- ha Frijolito watershed has been the subject of runoff and erosion monitoring for several years (Wilcox & Breshears, 1994; Wilcox et al., 1996a; Wilcox et al., 1996b). The larger paired treatment and control watersheds of the more recent Watershed Restoration project provide an opportunity to build on the findings of the Frijolito studies at a larger scale, and to examine the effects of selective tree thinning on understory growth, runoff and erosion. The first-order soil survey reported in this document was undertaken to provide baseline information on the distribution and character of soils in the two restoration project watersheds, to determine whether the treatment and control watersheds have similar soil properties, and to provide a basis for comparisons between Frijolito watershed and the restoration project watersheds.
