Observations indicate that one juvenile Bald Eagle fledged successfully from the Snag Lake territory in 1983. As mentioned above, this nesting territory has been considered of marginal quality in the past. It has been expected that in years of late lake thaw, the site would remain unused. However, 1983 was a season of extremely late thaw, with almost all lakes but Butte, Snag and Manzanita still frozen when viewed from the air on June 24, 1983. This may be in indication that some, perhaps unrecognized, factors make the Snag Lake site desirable for breeding eagles even when severe weather conditions prevail.
