Amphibians can be a useful indicator of environmental change because they are sensitive to habitat perturbations and other human-induced change (Blaustein and Wake 1990). Reports of amphibian declines throughout the world are currently a major concern for biologists (Pechmann et al. 1991). Reasons for these declines have been theorized to include habitat fragmentation (Dickman 1987; Laan and Verboom 1990), increased UVb radiation (Hays et al. 1996), episodic acidification (Vertucci and Corn 1996), exotic disease (Laurence et al. 1996), road mortalities (Jackson and Tyning 1989; Fahrig et al. 1995), and increased predation pressure (Drost and Fellers 1996). However, much of the evidence reporting amphibian declines is anecdotal, as few long-term amphibian monitoring programs have been initiated.
