Direct from publication, "Crater Lake National park offers a diversity of montane, subalpine and alpine sites in an area of volcanism. The accessibility of these sites coupled with their interesting geologic history and diverse plant communities provides a unique opportunity for study of higher fungi. The principal investigator of this project, with help of volunteers, has collected opportunistically in the park with special interes in the hyposgous species (truffles and false truffles). Lack of funding has limited the program, but 44 species of higher fungi in 25 genera and 18 families have now been recorded. We estimate the Park contains upwards of a thousand species. Even through this small effort we have recorded two new species, one each in the genera Rhizopogon and Gastrobotetus. A collection of a third, rare species (Rhizopogon hysterangioides) has enabled us to determine that it deserves status as a new genus separate from Rhizopogon.
