Map Showing Environmental Geology of Gulf of Alaska Coastal Area, Glacier Bay National Monument

Molnia BF and Wheeler MC. 1982. Map Showing Environmental Geology of Gulf of Alaska Coastal Area, Glacier Bay National Monument. US Geological Survey. Reston, VA. US Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map. USGS Miscellaneous Field Studies Map: 1207

This map summarizes the results of a 3-yr field and laboratory study designed to characterize the beach environment and the susceptibility to oil spills of the Gulf of Alaska coastal area of Glacier Bay National Monument. The study was jointly funded by the USGS and the NPS. The study (Molnia and Wheeler 1978) consisted of winter and summer field measurements of beach morphology and composition, sediment sample collection and analysis, comparison of aerial photographs and maps, and synthesis of published geologic literature. Criteria for the evaluation of the potential effects of an oil spill on the beach area were also developed by modifying published schemes of Hayes, Brown and Michel (1976) and Owens (1977) Description 1 map ;39 x 137 cm. on sheet 99 x 147 cm.
