Rapid wastage of Alaska glaciers and their contribution to rising sea level

Estimated volume changes of 67 glaciers in Alaska (and neighbouring Canada) mid-1950s-mid-1990s showed thinning. Measurement of 28 glaciers again from mid-1990s to 2000-2001 showed averaged thinning of -1.8 gm per year. These recent losses almost double estimated annual loss for entire Greenland ice sheet for same period and are much higher than loss estimates for Alaska glaciers, providing largest glaciological contribution to rising sea level yet measured
