This is a 2003 progress report for a two-year project conducted by the USGS Western Ecological Research Center, the USGS California Cooperative Fish Research Unit, and Humboldt State University. The objectives of the project are to establish the relative importance of size-specific, inorganic vs. organic components of the suspended load in influencing stream health, as reflected in the efficiency of feeding juvenile salmonids and their invertebrate food base. The study was conducted at selected sites within the Caspar Creek and Redwood Creek basins and discusses the results from biological and sediment sampling at four fish-bearing sites within the Prairie Creek basin (a tributary to Redwood Creek) and the Caspar Creek drainage. The results section of the report includes information on water quality, turbidity, suspended sediments, macroinvertebrate response to suspended sediment composition, fish diets, and fish feeding efficiency. The report notes that the project is still on-going, and all data presented should be considered preliminary.
