A Cooperative Agreement (CA) was established between Zion National Park (ZNP) and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) in 2003 for the purpose of implementing an avian monitoring program within ZNP along a portion of the North Fork of the Virgin River which is targeted for restoration. The CA is intended to provide guidance with the implementation of the restoration project in areas of avian habitat and to monitor avian populations. The goals of the project are to determine breeding and migrating bird species and abundances in the restoration project area and a reference portion of the river. Data will be collected within both areas which will be helpful in determining which bird species will potentially be affected by the restoration work and to establish a baseline of avian species information with which to compare restoration efforts. These data will allow the assessment of the proposed restoration and will also provide short-term population trend information for locally breeding birds and use of the project area by seasonal migrants. If continued for several years, trend data from this study can possibly be integrated with UDWR’s multi-year statewide riparian bird population trend assessments (Howe 1992, Norvell et al. 2003, In Press).
