Azis deer (Axis axis) on Kalaupapa Peninsula occupied ranges much smaller than reported in the literature. Average home range sizes were 26.5 +/- 10.1 ha (minimum convex polygon) and 52.7 +/- 12.6 ha (95% kernel). Small ranges were likely a result of abundant cover, forage and water in close proximity. Deer were found in very thick vegetation and high locations during the day. In the evening, deer moved toward open grassy areas, where they fed throughout the night. Deer movements and ranges were highly restricted at night. The mean deer population from october 1995 to February 1997 was 390 _/1 55 deer on the eastern side of the peninsula and survey data suggested an increasing population. From march 2000 to February 2001, the mean deer population was 41 +/- 11 deer in the same area, and the population apparently was decreasing. Survival of 20 radio-collared deer was very low. Kaplan-meier survival rate was 75% after 3 months and only 15% after 12 months.
