Heavy levels of pollution from the central valley move to the Sierra in the summer. "Peak ozone levels in the Sierra frequently exceed the State standard (>90 parts per billion) and daily average ozone levels exceed most urban areas (Lefohn et al, 1990)." Long-term ozone exposure appears to damage jeffrey and ponderosa pine. "The Forest Ozone Response Study, or Project FOREST, is a Sierran bioregional study involving the USFS, NPS, NBS, and State of California. The objectives of Project FOREST are to provide Federal Land Managers and the State with information on temporal and spatial ambient ozone concentrations in the Sierra and resulting ozone injury to ponderosa and Jeffrey pines."
