From the Abstract: "Road construction of the Redwood National Park bypass resulted in a large influx of fine sediments into the Prairie Creek drainage during a storm in October 1989. I studied the relationship of invertebrate communities with substrate size and permeability, within the drainage during the spring of 1996. Three impacted and three unimpacted tributaries from those previously used to assess the impacts on amphibians by Welsh and Ollivier (1992) were used as control and experimental streams. I took five samples from each of six streams during late spring, 1996. Seven metrics were used to show whether there was a difference in invertebrate communities between impacted and unimpacted streams. Boyes Creek and Brown Creek consistently scored poorly. Certain sensitive taxa, such as Perlidae and Heptageniidae, were not common in Brown Creek and Boyes Creek. Invertebrate and sediment data suggest that Big Tree Creek, once considered impacted, has made a recovery. Shannon-Wiener diversity plotted against Fredle Index values (permeability index) for all six streams yielded a P value of 0.189, but was correlated stronger when Boyes Creek and Brown was excluded from the regression analysis."
