Ornithophily Among the Hawaiian Lobelioideae (Campanulaceae): Evidence from Floral Nectar Sugar Compositions

Data on sugar compositions of floral nectars were used to test the hypothesis that the Hawaiian Lobelioideae were pollinated by nectarivorous passerine birds prior to widespread extinctions amoung the native avifauna. nectars from 24 individuals (representing different taxa [threee genera , ten species, and three interspecific hybrids, different conspecific populations ) were analyzed via high performance liquid chromotography. The nectars were the type prefered by passerine birds.
