This booklet was developed in 2003 to assist National Park Service personnel and interested visitors in identification of the modern reptiles and amphibians of Petrified Forest, and to provide easy access to natural history information for these species. This guide is meant to be a working document, updated as new species are found, and as additional natural history information becomes available. This publication was developed after a two-year inventory of the reptiles and amphibians of Petrified Forest conducted by the USGS Biological Resources Division Colorado Plateau Field Station in 1997 and 1998 (Drost et al. 2001). Much of the information presented here is based on that original inventory, and subsequent herpetological expeditions at Petrified Forest (Nowak and Persons 2000, Persons 2001) and other National Parks on the southern Colorado Plateau (e.g. Nowak et al. 2003). For more information, copies of these reports may be obtained from the Resource Management Office of Petrified Forest National Park or the author (contact information below). References used in this booklet are listed after the species accounts, and those which may be especially helpful are indicated by an asterisk (*). Common and scientific names used in this guide generally follow Stebbins (2003). However, a few name changes unfamiliar to most people have been avoided in favor of more established names found in Stebbins (1985).
