In the past decade, several inventories have been conducted at Petrified Forest National Park: a reptile and amphibian survey was completed in 1999 and mammal surveys were completed in 1996-1997. However, the proposal by Petrified Forest to replace existing sewage lines at both housing areas and near the Chide Point/Painted Desert Inn area necessitates additional surveys of those specific sites to ensure that no sensitive vertebrate species will be affected. I surveyed four locations in Petrified Forest National Park (Corresponding to the proposed construction locations) for mammal, reptile, and amphibian species using standard techniques. My research had the following objectives: 1) 1)Document non-avian vertebrate species within a 50-m radius of the sewage ponds and all potential sewer lines at the Rainbow Forest and Painted Desert housing/ visitor center areas, the Chinde Point picnic area, the Painted Desert Inn and the area along the main park road between the Painted Desert Inn and the Painted Desert housing area. 2) 2)Determine the relative abundance of each species. 3) 3) Determine if any sensitive mammal, amphibian, or reptile species are likely to be affected by the proposed construction, and make management recommendations.
