In the past decade, several vertebrate inventories have been conducted at Petrified Forest National Park: a reptile and amphibian survey was completed in 1999 (Drost et al. 2000)~ bird surveys were conducted between 1998 and 1999 (Banks and van Riper 2001 in review), and mammal surveys have also been conducted (Bangert 1998, M. Bogan, pers. comm.). However, the proposal by Petrified Forest to install new vault toilets and rehabilitate the existing facilities at several sites within the Park necessitates additional surveys of those specific sites to ensure that no sensitive vertebrate species will be affected. We surveyed four locations in Petrified Forest National Park (corresponding to the proposed vault toilet locations) for mammal, reptile, amphibian, and bird species using standard techniques. Surveys were conducted between August and September 2001. Our research had the following objectives: '1) Document vertebrate species present within a 100-m radius of the existing restroom and parking facilities at Chinde Point Picnic Area, Puerco Pueblo Tour Stop (including the sewage treatment lagoons west of the road), Agate Bridge Tour Stop, and Jasper Forest Tour Stop. 2) Determine relative abundance of each species. 3) Determine if any sensitive mammal, amphibian, reptile, or bird species are likely to be affected by the proposal facility changes, and make management recommendations.
