Subsistence

Human communities have existed in Prince William Sound,Cook Inlet, and the Gulf of Alaska for at least 7,000 years. This is the traditional territory of the Alutiiq, whose way of life has always been oriented towards the shorelines and the sea.1 Although they were among the first Alaska Natives to experience Euro-American exploration and colonization, the Alutiiq have maintained a culture based upon subsistence uses of fish and wildlife and other Alaska Native traditions.2 Many other people who have settled in the area also have adopted a subsistence way of life.
