'Pathogens influence and are influenced by forest development and landscape characteristics.' Pathogens are responsible for the specific dynamics of natural forest communities, but are much less well known than other catastrophic events. Pathogen interaction with abiotic disturcances control the direction and rate of forest succession and can become important especially when the landscape is modified. Article addresses species distributions and abundance, forest structure and composition, interacting parameters, formation of canopy gaps, pathogen impact on stand and site conditions, effect on animal species, land-use history, management practices and disease, a conceptual model of pathogens and forest stage, and disease and ecological balance.
