To increase waterfowl use, managers periodically thin dense stands of emergent vegetation. Rodeo herbicide (glyphosate) is being used extensively to control emergent vegetation in prairie wetlands. Little is known about waterfowl, aquatic invertebrate, and vegetation responses to chemically created openings. This article evaluated the use of Rodeo herbicide to create openings in dense cattail stands in northeastern South Dakota, and use of these openings by pairs of breeding ducks, over-watering nesting ducks, and aquatic invertebrates.
