Purple loosestrife rapidly spreads, expands into disturbed sites, and is difficult to control. For these reasons early detection is important. Past efforts to estimate the extent of wetland infestation by loosestrife have been expensive and time consuming. This article describes a rapid and inexpensive method for documenting locations and sizes of purple loosestrife stands by use of true-color aerial photographs. In most agricultural states, photographic transparencies that allow detection of purple loosestrife are available at U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation (ASCS) offices, as are the instruments to quantify stand size. Detection of loosestrife could be accomplished with the cooperation of ASCS personnel and minimal investment of time.
