The gravity field in northern California with sections on the Coast Ranges, Great Valley area, Sierra Nevada and Great Basin Provinces, the Klamath mountains, and the Cascade Mountains and Modoc Plateau provinces is discussed. Within the Lassen Peak area, there is a large gravity low which is thought to result from the volcanotectonic subsidence. When Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak are compared, they are found to have negative anomalies ranging from a low of -35 to a high of -50 and -70 mgal (respectively). It is postulated that this is due to a large volume of low-density material at a shallow depth.
