Feature Analysis of Natural Sounds in the Songbird Auditory Forebrain

Sen K, Theunissen FE, Doupe AJ. 2001. Feature Analysis of Natural Sounds in the Songbird Auditory Forebrain. Journal of Neurophysiology. 86:1445-1458

To understand how sounds are heard in and interpreted and ultimately influence an organism's behavior, it is important to investigate the processing of natural sounds. However, little is known about the neural encoding of natural sounds. ...it has become increasingly clear that it is difficult to use this (from studies using synthetic stimuli) konwledge to predict the neural responses to complex natural sounds such as vocalization.
