Visitor and Aircraft Use of the Ruth Glacier, Denali National Park and Preserve, 1999
Valentine D, Van Horn J, Fortier K. 2000. Visitor and Aircraft Use of the Ruth Glacier, Denali National Park and Preserve, 1999
This report summarizes the field observations form April to July 1999 on the Ruth Glacier. The primary purpose of the fieldwork was to collect information for use in the decision making process for the management of the back country portions of Denali National Park and Preserve (NP & P). The management of the remote back country portions on the south side of the Alaska range is one of the important issues that must be considered in the planning process. While some general guidance was provided in a 1997 Development Concept Plan for the south slope region, more specific decisions will be made in the new plan. Consequently, better information is needed for popular locations such as the Ruth glacier where many different types of use are occurring at the same time, and where an increasing potential for conflict and resource impact exist.
