This report evaluates the area of the Wapi Lava Field surrounding Pillar Butte for classification as a National Natural Landmark. This unique area contains many features characteristic of fresh basaltic flows such as ropy festoons, chaotic blocks, pressure ridges, and collapsed lava tubes. The report (which includes pictures) gives an overview of this area and explains why it is so instructive in the mechanisms of volcanism.
