This paper looks at the effects of stream hardening and removal of riparian vegetation on water quality in Waimanalo and Kaneohe Streams on Oahu, HI. Effects included increased water temperature and light levels, increased pH and dissolved oxygen, and loss of sediment and microbial processes such as denitrification. Stream hardening and channelization are common for flood control in Hawaii.
